Mathematics is a beautiful subject, but its beauty is often hidden behind a haze of symbols and formulas. Many of the fundamental ideas of mathematics are best explained by words and pictures, which can be understood by anyone with a basic mathematical education (say, a semester of calculus). While symbols are a necessary part of mathematics, they are just a shorthand for ideas that must first be learned through language and visual intuition. The equation 1 + 1 = 2 is meaningless until the concept of addition is explained in words.
